implications. brianne carter is live in cheverly with more. good morning. >> good morning. if the polls open in less than an hour or at 7:00. a number of candidates are running for prince george's county county executive, however, the focus has been on the top two, rushern baker and michael jackson. after months of hitting the campaign trail, finally down to the top two candidates vying to be the next county executive in prince george's county. in tough economic times, michael jackson and rushern baker are talking jobs. >> we can build capacity for our businesses to borrow, employment, that is our focus. >> we emphasize places like new carrollton. we take stay dollars and federal dollars and development around metro stations. >> baker runs a foundation for trying to bring quality teachers to the county. but that experience had trained me to deal with problems that lie ahead for prince george's

it is primary day in maryland and the district. in d.c. the voters will cast their ballots in the mayor's race if between adrian fenty and vincent gray. they will choose candidates for several city offices. maryland voters will decide governor and other state, county, and other local offices. the obama administration hopes a federal judge in florida will toss out a lawsuit by that state and 19 others over the new health-care reform laws. they say provisions requiring people to have held insurance or face tax penalties are unconstitutional. d.c. says -- bp says crews of baghdad where drilling a relief well to permanently sealed blown-out oilwell in the gulf. most of the oil that gushed from

oil well has been appearing in the sediment at the bottom of the sea floor. to officials of trying to determine what is to blame for the charlottetown on the deadline. it started with an electric the problem that shut down the wheaton station. that situation quickly turned much more dangerous. courtney robinson is live on the scene with the rest of the story. good morning. >> good morning. this did turn potentially dangerous for a number of customers. there was electricity running through broken escalators. these escalators were electrified. the elevators will also -- were also broken. the transit agency immediately shut down the wheaton metro stop, but some danger did come into play when one train operator did not get the message that the wheaton stop had been closed. she let off roughly 50 passengers here. some got on those escalators.

they were told to immediately get all of those electrified escalators. then they were told to get back on the train. they went to force glenn -- the forest glen. no one was hurt. one customer remains frustrated. >> we were asking why we could not walk up to the station and they told us the escalator we just put you on was electrified. >> the wheaton station is up and running this morning. it reopened at 9:00 last night with one escalator and one elevator in service. courtney robinson reporting live from wheaton. >> thank you. robberies on metal are on the rise. small electronic devices are the prime target. there were 540 robberies on trains and buses this year through the end of june. that is 160 more than during the same time last year. that is double the number from the first half of 2008. robbers often grab a person's

green belt, and accident was reported. let me take you to 270. more of your neighbors are on the road. southdown is slowing from 189 and then father hurley boulevard to 118. our top story this half-hour is primary day in the district. the battle for d.c. mayor is one of the hottest local races. the polls will open in about half an hour. pamela brown begins our coverage live at a polling station in southeast. any signs of activity? >> yes, people are starting to arrive. polling centers are gearing up to welcome voters in just about half an hour. this is dealt wellness center on alabama avenue in southeast d.c. candidate vincent gray will arrived at a polling center opens around 7:00 this morning. from here, he will make several stops throughout the day until polls close at 8:00 tonight.

officials estimate that more than 22,000 d.c. voters have already cast their ballots. turnout for the primary is estimated to be 55% which is up from 34%. mayor adrian fenty has been put up a tough fight against vincent gray. vincent gray has been steadily at had in the polls. mayor fenty says his track record will help put him over the edge. both of the candidates will be pushing their message and try to get last minute votes before polls close at 8:00 tonight. d.c. voters will notice some changes this year. the district has unveiled new voter technology. that includes new voting machines and electronic pull books. people will be allowed to register and register on the same day. d.c. officials say that more than 22,000 voters have already taken advantage of early voting.

welcome back at 6:44. this is primary day in maryland and the district. the contentious matters raised in d.c. between mayor adrian fenty and vincent gray will come to an end and voters will choose candidates for several other city offices. maryland voters will decide who runs for governor and other state, county, and local offices this fall. this is the explosion that rocked the california never last week and it shows how ferocious that fire was. authorities say four people died and dozens of homes were damaged or destroyed. because of the blast is still not known. secretary of state hillary clinton arrived in egypt is money for the second round of peace talks between the israelis and palestinian leaders.

she told reporters she believes the time is right for both sides to make permanent peace. the metro elevator and escalator problems have been widely reported but it was that common problem combined with a communication meltdown that created a situation that was pretty dangerous. it happened in wheaton during the height of the evening rush- hour. courtney robinson is live on the scene this morning with what went wrong >> metro says they are looking into it this morning, trying to figure out exactly what went wrong. it was that a communication breakdown that could have led to a very serious danger for many passengers. >> that's what happens in the metro. >> 41 metro rider, it seemed like one thing after another. a mistake by the transit agency put -- could have turned dangerous. >> all got on the escalator to go up and they started shouting

to get off and get back on the train then it turns out that the escalator was electrified and with elevators out of service, the agency shut down the wheaton station. the train operator did not know the station was closed and neither did the 50 passengers who got back on the same train. they shuttled back to we tend them a very frustrating. >> a similar incident happened saturday when an elevator broke trapped -- trapping 16 people inside for 30 minutes. we can tell you that luckily no one was injured in this situation. metro is looking into all of desperate the wheaton station reopens today. one escalator, one elevator is in service. a meeting is set for today to try to resolve a bus driver's strike that left thousands of prince george's county passengers stranded.

does not quite a conspiracy but movement that does not have its roots in delaware and money is coming from the tea party movement nationally and other big republican funders. on the other hand, castle gets a lot of his money from d.c. lobbyists. maybe the shoe is on the other foot. >> sarah palin induced -- endorsed his opponent. he wonders if she has ever been to the state. locally, our big race, the d.c. mayor's race, this has taken on some national prominence. >> i think it is a measure of anti-incumbency. this is not just a question of the conservative part of the republican party versus the centrist part of the republican party. the sentiment across the country is anger at incumbents matter what party they are if you are perceived as an incumbent or part of the establishment, you are vulnerable to going down. that is what we are seeing in
